METALLICA's ROBERT TRUJILLO Says His Bandmates Are 'All Wonderful In Their Own Way'

September 22, 2014

During a brand new interview with Argentinean rock journalist Lucas H. Gordon, METALLICA bassist Robert Trujillo was asked to describe each of his bandmates in a few words.

"They're all wonderful in their own way," Robert said (see video below). "They're all very different, and that's the thing that's really interesting about METALLICA as a band."

He continued: "You're dealing with a European [drummer Lars Ulrich] who's extremely liberal and incredibly intelligent. [He has] a really different mindset than all of us, because of the way he was raised and his upbringing and his education.

"James [Hetfield; guitar, vocals], actually, is the musical talent in the band, for sure, but at the same time, he's a pretty sensitive personality. He's got a strong exterior and he's extremely loyal and powerful in that way. And really, for me, I learned so much from him, as a person, but also through music.

"We're all… None of us are perfect in our lives — none of us — but we do the best we can with our music. I mean, it is what it is. We laugh at it. Sometimes it's really cool, and sometimes it's really, really not cool. That's okay. You always have fun and do the best you can.

"Kirk [Hammett, guitar], on the other hand, he does yoga twice a day, he surfs, he probably meditates. He doesn't eat any red meat.

"I mean, it's just different characters.

"James loves cars — he loves everything from vintage cars to rat rods, low riders, custom [cars]… I love surfing. I love the ocean too.

"Kirk and I are avid surfers, so whenever we get a chance… even Bali. We were in Bali. Wherever we are, if there's a wave, we wanna surf it. So invite us to your favorite spots, people, wherever you're from, and we'll surf [there]."

METALLICA's performance at the Heavy Montreal festival in early August marked the sole North American date on the "Metallica By Request" tour, which hit Europe and South America earlier in the year. The trek featured the band playing 17 songs requested online by fans in each city, with the final slot in the set list taken by a new song, "Lords Of Summer".

METALLICA will reportedly be working on its 10th studio album throughout the rest of this fall for a tentative 2015 release.
